Study accountability apps compared: what each one actually checks (2026)

By Yanis, founder of Kleus · Last updated 26 August 2026

Most study accountability apps verify that you showed up, not that you learned anything: Focusmate checks presence, Habitica and Forest check taps, Beeminder and StickK check a number you report. As of August 2026, Kleus is the one built around graded work: one assignment a day, scored, with the plan rewritten from the result. Here is how they compare, honestly.

Disclosure: Kleus is our product. It is listed on the same terms as everything else here, described from what it actually does, and each of the others is described from its own published pages, which are linked. Where another tool is the better choice, this page says so.

Why “did you show up?” is the wrong question

Every tool in this category has to verify something, and almost all of them picked the same thing: attendance. It is easy to measure, easy to display, and easy to satisfy without learning anything. That is why people hold long streaks and still cannot do the thing at the end.

The alternative is to verify output: require something you made, evaluate it, and change what happens next based on the result. It is harder to build and much harder to fake, and it happens to also be the study method with the strongest evidence behind it. Producing an answer from memory and checking it beats re-reading by a wide margin (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006; Adesope and colleagues, 2017).

How to choose

  • If starting is your problem, get a body double. Kleus vs Focusmate covers where the two split.
  • If a visible daily habit is your problem, get stakes or a call. That is what Beeminder, StickK and FineStreak are for.
  • If finishing a subject is your problem, get a plan you are graded on. That is the gap this whole page is about.

The three pages that go deeper: why streaks fail, stakes without fines, and why an AI-written plan is not the same as finishing.

Frequently asked

Do any of these check what I learned?

Almost none of them. Focusmate checks presence, Habitica and Forest check a tap or an untouched phone, Beeminder and StickK check a number you report. Checking learning means requiring an output and evaluating it, which is a much harder product to build.

Is a streak app enough for studying?

For getting a daily habit off the ground, often yes. For finishing a subject, no: a tap cannot tell a two-minute session from a fifty-minute one, and the streak eventually breaks and takes the motivation with it.

Does ChatGPT check your work?

It will evaluate anything you paste in, and often well. It will not require an output, keep a record of what you were weak on, or come looking for you tomorrow. Those three gaps are why an excellent AI-written plan still goes unfollowed.

Which one should I pick?

Match the tool to the failure mode. If starting is the problem, get a body double. If a visible daily habit is the problem, get stakes or a call. If finishing a subject is the problem, get a plan you are graded on.
